The LEED Certification system has today made its way into the lives and minds of a large chunk of consumers looking for a piece of commercial or residential real estate space. The primary reason behind this is the fact that more and more individuals are today waking up to the need of creating a future that can bear the burden of an ever rising population and realizing the importance of environmental stability for the sustenance of the human race. There is a host of responsible real estate organizations taking the initiative and developing their structures in accordance with the norms and requirements of the Green Building Concept
There are several different types of buildings that are assigned a Green Building status by a US based organization called the USGBC or United States Green Buildings Council. This is the premier organization awarding Green Building status to various constructions basis their structural, design and operational facets. In this regard, the USGBC has put in place a special rating system commonly known as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). This system evaluates building on the merits of different elements such as siting, design, architectural elements, power consumption and renewal and so on. It is on the cumulative scores for these different elements that a consolidated score is assigned to the building classifying it into one of the four categories namely Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
The LEED rating system aims to achieve a classification of buildings based on their potential environmental impacts and potential human benefits of each element. The primary intention behind the entire endeavor is to ensure that constructions are met with the necessary guidelines and developed with technologies that are economically viable and environmentally sustainable.
